Unknown is a 2011 movie thriller starring Liam Neeson. With the very recent success of "Taken" in which Neeson must scramble to find his daughter's abductors before she disappears forever, Neeson now seems perfect for this kind of role where he is a determined fighting man on a quest, up against several varied and often surprisingly strong adversaries.
Unknown was shot in Germany in several locations of that country. The airport scenes were shot in Leipzig/Halle Airport in Leipzig, Germany. Most of the street scenes were shot in Berlin, with other scenes being shot in Studio Babelsberg in Brandenburg.
Liam Neeson plays Dr. Martin Harris, a man who awakens from a coma to discover that he has no identity; in fact, someone has stolen his name and identity. Not even his wife -- played by Diane Kruger -- believes him. Neeson's character then must begin a long battle of intelligence and physical strength to prove who he is. Along the way he enlists the aid of a young woman (played by January Jones) to help him prove his identity.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, with a screenplay by Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell, "Unknown" features a fast-paced, harrowing story with several exciting twists.
Plunged into a confusing labyrinth of places and people, Dr. Harris knows little except his name and certain facts of his life, and this is the very thing everyone is denying him. His quest to bring his world back also propels new perspective about what he was and who he will be. People placed outside their own lives like this can much more easily see the truth about themselves. Dr. Harris, as he tries to piece his identity back together, begins to see himself much more clearly than could have been possible before. Will he like what he was? Will he be proud of who he has become? These are very interesting questions that the film explores.
In movies that explore identity-seeking such as "Unknown," it is also very interesting to watch the character deal with the other people he encounters. When we are secure in our identity after years of being "who we are," we perhaps treat the other people in our lives in an automatic fashion. To use the old cliche, we "take them for granted." This movie allows us to watch a character who, through the course of his quest, simply cannot take anyone for granted. In a way, losing one's identity is a blessing because all relationships can once again be fresh. In this and other ways is "Unknown" thought-provoking while still an excellent action film.
