It's a testament to the narrative power of the Disney-Pixar franchise Toy Story that there is a third movie at all. Toy Story 2 - released in 1999 - was initially going to be a straight-to-DVD follow-up, but early test scenes played so well that it graduated back to the big screen.
Following the 3D re-release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in the fall of 2009 comes a new adventure due in theaters June 18th, wherein Woody, Buzz and the gang must cope with the departure of their owner Andy for college and a new, daycare center home. Fourteen new toy characters join the Tom Hanks-Tim Allen animated duo in this latest adventure, including an octopus named Stretch (voice of Whoopi Goldberg), a stuffed pink Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear (Ned Beatty), Buttercup the Unicorn (Jeff Garlin) and insectaloid warrior Twitch (voice to be announced). Replacing Ernest namesake Jim Varney, who passed in 2000, as the voice of Slinky Dog is stand-up comic and frequent Adam Sandler co-star Blake Clark.
A different script for Toy Story 3, in which a defective Buzz Lightyear is sent back to Taiwan, was in the Disney pipeline in the mid-2000s until it was vetoed by Pixar chief John Lasseter after a new partnership deal between the two studios was struck. All these years later, Toy Story 3 stands as the first Disney film to be simultaneously released in IMAX 3D. Eagle-eyed watchers of Up may also have noticed that the aforementioned new Toy Story 3 character Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear cameod briefly under a little girl's bed.
