Season of the Witch is the 2010 film starring Nicholas Cage and a ragtag cast of what people had before now considered B-list actors including Ron Perlman and Claire Foy. This supernatural thriller was directed by Dominic Sena who chose Hungary, Austria, and Croatia as the locations for filming. The untouched ruggedness of these locations lent themselves greatly to the 14th century, end of the crusades setting for the story. While Cage and Perlman represent some of the most hated historical figures in much of the Eastern world (Crusaders), the film is set to be one of the most interesting films of 2011. Not to be confused with George Romero's Season of the Witch from 1972, this film is certainly one of a kind.
Nicholas Cage has spent a considerable amount of time playing time-piece roles over his career and this film is no different. Playing the role of Behman, a disillusioned crusader returned home to his apparently black-plague ravaged village with his friend Felson (played by Ron Perlman). While searching for food and supplies, Behman and Felson, along with four others, are forced to transport a young girl (Claire Foy) to a distant Abbey. It is the belief of the villagers and it's papacy that the young girl has used her powers as a witch to bring the pestilence into the village. The monks of the Abbey are supposed to complete a ritual which will destroy the witches powers over the village. Cage's character decides to do as he is bid but warns the people of the village if the girls witchcraft isn't sufficiently proven to him over the journey that he will release the girl himself.
This proclamation is foreshadowed by the sweeping vistas, overcast skies and bone chilling scores created by Atli Ovarsson (best known for his work on The Fourth Kind) which set the scene dramatically for the twists and turns throughout the film. Amir Mokri (Coyote Ugly, National Treasure: Book of Secrets) has lent his truly genius cinematography to giving the picture a tangible darkness visible even in the trailers. In a twisted tale of broken faith, self-evaluation, and fear Cage, Foy and Perlman band together to create the ultimate in dramatic supernatural thrillers, well assisted in technical skill by all members of the Season of the Witch production team.
