Rango is the much-anticipated animated adventure starring the voices of Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Harry Dean Stanton, Bill Nighy, Abigail Breslin, Ned Beatty, and Timothy Oliphant. This computer-animated blockbuster is directed by Gore Verbinski and was produced by Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic as their first animated feature in over 35 years.
Johnny Depp plays Rango, a chameleon. This particular chameleon is house-bred and lives a life of luxury in a well cared-for terrarium. Rango thinks of himself as a hero and plays tough in his terrarium, but when he is accidentally released, he finds his strongest suit is his charisma. The Hawaiian shirt-wearing lizard makes his way through the desert wilderness and ends up in a town based on the American Old West by the name of Dirt.
The town is made up of a range of little varmints and critters based on stereotypical Old West figures. There is a spider who is a sniper (Stanton), a Gila Monster named Bad Bill (Ray Winstone), a tortoise called John (Beatty), and a voice known as The Spirit of the West (Olyphant). The villain of the movie is Rattlesnake Jake who wields a Gatling gun in his tale and is voiced by Nighy.
When Rango arrives in Dirt, he half jokingly and half delusionally establishes himself as the sheriff of the town and starts patrolling the streets as his beat. However, there is a reason there is no existing sheriff in Dirt. All of the past sheriffs and do-gooders have been put in their graves, and there is a cemetery full of stones to prove it. Rango, not being one to be thwarted by such tales, continues to portray himself as the town lawman. He is able get in with some of the residents because he is so charming, but they fear for his life since it won’t be long before Rattlesnake Jake returns with his gang to make trouble.
Rango begins to understand the truth of the matter before too long, and he discovers some important things about himself. The question becomes if he will realize who he is, how he fits into the world, and what he needs to do before it is too late.
Although Rango was announced in June of 2010, it was not slated to be released until almost a year later in March 2011. In that time, anticipation has been building not only in long-time fans of Johnny Depp, but in fans of animation and animals in general. Industrial Light & Magic did a magnificent job capturing the physical characteristics of each actor to fit into their animated counterparts. The project originally began as a mild diversion for director Verbinski after completing the epic Pirates of the Caribbean series, but his mild diversion became much, much more.
