A classic story once again retold. Coming to theatres everywhere this spring will be the famous tale of Alice in Wonderland. Tim Burton brings to life on screen the celebrated novel originally written by Lewis Carroll.
Burton is the director of such charismatic films as Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Nightmare before Christmas, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Burton is famous for his gothic, dark edge in films and brings this right along with his fantasy tale of Alice. Filmed against the backdrop of classic England, Burton uses his usual talent of looking at stories from another side, brings Alice to an older age of teenager.
This new twist on the tale has been penned by screenwriter Linda Woolverton. Here we find Alice returning to Wonderland 10 years after her first visit. While Burton's films are never traditional, the traditional characters from the book return. Each plays a role again guiding Alice through vast, dazzling landscape of Wonderland.
As with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Burton brings back Johnny Depp to portray the vibrant character of the Mad Hatter. A role well suited to Depp's ability to take on and personify a lead role. Depp has appeared in many of Burton's films besides Charlie, such as Sleepy Hollow and Edward himself in Edward Scissorhands.
A star-filled cast includes Helena Bonham Carter as the riotous Red Queen, and Alan Rickman as the cool Caterpillar. Michael Sheen will be jumping through the movie as the ever-late for an important date White Rabbit. Other favorite characters include Christopher Lee as the Jabborwock and Crispin Glover as the Knave. Stephen Fry will play the infamous Cheshire Cat. Fresh newcomer Mia Wasikowska will portray the famous Alice.
This will not be the first time that Alice in Wonderland has graced the big screen. Walt Disney made an animated version of Alice in Wonderland in 1951 that has become a children's classic. Burton's remake, in collaboration with Walt Disney as well, promises to be an engaging tale for many different ages. The film is being shown in traditional theatres as well as IMAX 3D, which should prove a great use of Burton's colorful imagination, and has a release date of March 5, 2010 but we have it first and its available now!
